More than just a limited series
In the world of cars, a "one-off" designates a single, unique, made-to-measure model. Thanks to its Coachbuild department, the British manufacturer Rolls-Royce offers the happy few, often anonymous, the chance to participate in the design of a bespoke vehicle, ultra-exclusive and personalized down to the very last detail. Produced in three unique versions, two already unveiled, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a perfect illustration of the craze for one-offs in the automobile world.
An assertively nautical style
As its name suggests, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail draws inspiration from the boating world. As witnessed by its first version presented in 2021, a convertible 5.80 metres long with bodywork inspired by legendary Riva runabouts with hulls made of precious wood, highly-prized by celebrities in the 1960's. When it was presented, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail smashed the record for the world's most expensive new car (23 million euros), previously held by Bugatti's Black Car (17 million euros).
A rare new gem
Rolls-Royce lifted the veil on the second version of its Boat Tail at the last Concorso d'Eleganza for collectors' cars at the Villa d’Este in Italy. Estimated at slightly more than 26 million euros, this new version stands out for truly "one-off" colouring inspired by four pearl shells from the personal collection of its future owner, who wanted to pay tribute with this ultra-personalized car to his father who made his fortune in the pearling industry.
With its touches of oyster, bronze, pink and cognac combined with flakes of white, Rolls-Royce sets its signature to "one of the most complex bespoke finishes ever created by the brand". As for the first model, the rear deck clad in Royal Walnut veneer again opens like butterfly wings to form a table and reveal a fridge for champagne, a picnic basket signed Christofle, and a parasol.
Inside, the passenger compartment is comprised of wood, leathers and varnished features, while the dashboard is adorned with a timepiece made of mother-of-pearl, also from the owner's private collection. "Haute couture" of the automobile industry, in the words of Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
