In a world undergoing constant change and confronted by climate change, the automobile industry is ceaselessly reinventing itself. While not intended to meet up on the road, concept cars sketch out the contours of tomorrow's vehicles.
The arrival of electric vehicles on the market drastically transformed the scene for the automobile sector. Subjected to ever stricter environmental obligations to reduce greenhouse gas, manufacturers have changed gear to imagine the car of tomorrow. The luxury sector is no exception; Jaguar and Bentley have already taken the electric hairpin bend by making official nnouncements of their conversion to all-electric in the coming years. Just recently, German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz distinguished itself on the electromobility scene by revealing its "Vision EQXX" concept car boasting a battery with a range of over 1,000 kilometres with a single recharge, the longest distance so far posted by an electric vehicle. All paired with highly desirable, sophisticated and futuristic design.
The future of the automobile thus seems all mapped out. Though the car with a hydrogen-powered fuel cell is an alternative route, not to be neglected. BMW has been working with Toyota for more than a decade to develop this technology, and Renault presented a hydrogen-powered concenpt car at the "ChangeNOW" summit meeting in Paris last May. Alpine, owner of the Renault group, recently allowed students at the European Design Institute in Turin to come up with a hydrogen supercar concept, baptized "A4810".
The autonomous, or self-drive, car is undoubtedly the most spectacular innovation in the automobile sector to date. Tesla, the US manufacturer of electric vehicles, is a pioneer in the field with its "Autopilot" system. While drawing lots of media attention due, in particular, to numerous failings, it is advancing from one year to the next. The goal of the "FSD Autopilot" (ie. Full Self-Driving) is to become 10 times safer than a human being behind the wheel. In this arena, Tesla has just been joined by Cadillac which presented its "InnerSpace" concept car at the last edition of the CES in Las Vegas (the world's most influential event in the field of new technologies). Cadillac up-ended codes by revealing a 100% autonomous vehicle… with neither steering wheel nor pedals! Instead, a single screen, immersive and curved, placed in the position of the dashboard and enabling passengers to control the entire vehicle (general data, journey, entertainment etc.)
