In the steps of an age-old kingdom

Before stepping onto the immaculate sand of Okinawa’s idyllic islands, immerse yourself in the fascinating past of the ancient kingdom of Ryūkyū. The entrance to the archipelago, Naha, its capital, hosts three of its nine sites listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage. Visits to the castle of Shuri, the Tamaudun mausoleum, and the royal gardens of Shikinaen give a good glimpse of the heritage handed down by this dynasty that reigned over the islands from the 14th to 19th centuries. Fans of history should also discover Sefa-Utaki, one of the seven sacred sites in the Ryūkyū islands, or the ruins of the Nakijin castle, cradled in lush vegetation on the Motobu peninsula.

A foretaste of paradise

Then set off for the Miyako islands, 300 km south-west of Naha. An idyllic setting: on one side, fields of sugarcane as far as the eye can see, on the other, sublime beaches lapped by the turquoise sea. Its extraordinary depths invite divers to make memorable encounters: humpback whales, manta rays, sea turtles. On the Miyako islands, mornings are devoted to the pleasures of snorkeling, while afternoons are dedicated to farniente, especially on the beach of Yonaha Maehama - seen as the loveliest in Japan – where 7 km of lovely sand wait just for you.

Japan’s hidden treasures

Finally, head for the Yaeyama islands, the furthest south in the archipelago of Okinawa. They include Ishigaki island and its bay of Kabira, awarded 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide to Japan. Understandably: tropical forests, rocky cliffs, and sandy beaches compose its picture-postcard scenery. Don’t miss the temple overlooking it, to enjoy a breathtaking view.

A 10-minute boat ride from the main island, Taketomi then proposes immersion in authentic Okinawan culture. Stroll along the sandy streets of its village, home to some 350 people, where buffalo-drawn carts pass between traditional houses with stone walls. Mostly covered by the jungle, the island of Iriomote is even more surprising. This listed national park is an ideal playground for fans of sport and adventure. Explore it in a kayak, paddle through its mangroves, observe its endemic fauna and flora, but also admire its spectacular waterfalls, such as those of Pinaisara, the highest in Okinawa.
