A real pioneer in sustainable development, Chopard has produced all its alloys in its own foundry since 1978, thus enabling it to re-cast gold waste and recycle unused materials. Since July 2018, all of its collections have also been made of ethical Fairmined gold. This label certifies that the gold is produced by artisanal mining on a small scale, complying with main world standards for responsible practices.
It is one of the main measures adopted by Chopard as part of its "Voyage towards Sustainable Luxury" initiated in 2013 with the aim of guaranteeing responsible practices throughout its supply chain. By joining the Coloured Gemstones Working Group (CGWG) in 2019, Chopard also strives to ensure the greatest transparency regarding the sourcing of its coloured stones. This allows it to work with responsibly mined opals, emeralds and Paraiba tourmalines. Finally, as a certifed member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), Chopard supports the Kimberley Process entrusted with preventing "conflict diamonds" from entering the international market.
Pomellato is also deeply committed to sustainability and ethical practices. In 2018, this Italian firm unveiled Nuvola, its first collection of 100 % responsible jewellery. Made of Fairmined gold sourced from members of the RJC, all its creations are adorned with fully traceable diamonds and/or coloured stones. In 2021, for international Earth Day, Pomellato enriched this collection with a solitaire ring bearing a responsibly sourced, deep red Greenland ruby.
While leading names in luxury are becoming increasingly eco-responsible, some young French jewellers have made sustainable development their signature. Launched in 2010, JEM Jewellery Ethically Minded proposes modern, sustainable and enlightened jewellery based on the values of transparency, awareness and respect. It thus solely uses Fairmined gold and cultured diamonds. The same goes for Courbet, which defines itself as a "Jeweller with Values". Based on Place Vendôme, it was the first to lay claim to the use of cultured diamonds and recycled gold in its creations. Manuel Mallen, one of its founders, adds : "Science and technology make it possible to produce a diamond whose physical, chemical and optical characteristics are exactly the same as those of mined diamonds. As for gold, there is more of it above the surface of the Earth than beneath it". Remarks that make you think and herald a rosy future for ethical luxury jewellery.
