Renaissance of the Orient Express

Nicknamed "King of trains, Train of kings", the legendary Orient Express is about to write a new chapter in its history.

Once upon a time, the Orient Express…

A Belgian engineer answering to the name of Georges Nagelmackers can be credited with the famous Orient Express. After a trip to the USA where he discovered trains with sleeping-cars (which he found uncomfortable), he came up with the idea of creating a refined and luxurious train inspired by the world's finest hotels, for an affluent European clientele. In 1872, he founded the "Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits " and on October 4th, 1883, the Orient Express train treated itself to a first trip from Paris to Constantinople. In 1919, a new itinerary passing through Switzerland and Italy was inaugurated to avoid having the Orient Express run through Germany. The famous midnight-blue and gold sleeping-cars then made their appearance with the Simplon-Orient-Express, which completed its first trip from Paris to Istanbul in 1977.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

In 1982, in the person of James Sherwood, the Groupe Belmond (henceforth owned by LVMH), set restored Orient Express sleeping-cars back on the rails, departing from London and Paris, and heading for Venice. Still today, the Venice Simplon-Orient Express travels all over Europe, calling at many cities such as Verona, Florence, Rome, as well as Brussels and Amsterdam. 450 metres long, comprised of 18 carriages, the Venice Simplon-Orient Express has retained all the charm and splendour of yesteryear. As witnessed by its majestic decor consisting of Art Nouveau marquetry and Art Deco glass, recalling the "Belle Époque" and the Roaring 'Twenties. The compartments, each one as elegant as the last, morph into sitting-rooms during the day so you can admire the changing scenery. Your tastebuds are also conquered with three on-board restaurants offering a high-flying gastronomic experience. The promise of an unforgettable trip back in time.

Orient Express, "La Dolce Vita"

In 2023, 150 years after the birth of the Orient Express, Accor (co-owner of the Orient Express brand with SNCF) will unveil a new generation of the legendary train called "La Dolce Vita", in partnership with the Italian Arsenale group. Six trains comprised of 11 carriages, 12 Deluxe cabins, 19 suites (one bearng the "Prestige" label) and a gastronomic restaurant, will follow the legendary routes of the old "Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits" throughout Italy. They will also head for three international destinations, departing from Rome: Paris, Istanbul and Split. Inside the trains, the Golden Age of Italian design will be paired with a contemporary style of travelling, thanks to the talent of Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran de Dimorestudio. In the kitchens, top international chefs will enhance trans-Alpine culinary traditions accompanied by the finest wines. And to make everything perfect, a dedicated staff will propose personalized services to make each passenger's journey  unique. Real palaces on rails! Finally, in 2024, the Orient Express will unveil its first 5-star hotel in Rome, in a 17th-century palace on the Piazza della Minerva, near the Pantheon. By 2030, a collection of ten 5-star Orient Express hotels are scheduled to open.
