Time to save the oceans

Many watchmakers are committed to protecting the oceans. Here are a few recent initiatives.

Blancpain Ocean Commitment

Designer of the first modern diver's watch, Blancpain is a pioneer in exploration of the oceans. Through the Blancpain Ocean Commitment programme, this watchmaker plays a significant role in their preservation and conservation. For example, it provided support for the Pristine Seas expeditions which led to the creation of new protected marine areas, covering over 4 million sq. kilometres worldwide. Since 2013, it has also backed the Gombessa project launched by wildlife photographer Laurent Ballesta. Until 2023, in partnership with the Mokkarran Protection Society, Blancpain will also provide support for the Tamataroa project, named after the great hammerhead shark in French Polynesia, threatened with extinction.

Carl F. Bucherer & Manta Trust

In 2017, watchmaker Carl F. Bucherer joined forces the Manta Trust to offer manta rays a future. Part of the funds received for the new Patravi ScubaTec Maldives watch will be dedicated to financing the creation of a new floating research station in the Maldives. It will enable the world's leading manta ray experts to gain access to very distant areas in order to observe the behaviour of this endangered species.

Oris "Change for the Better"

As part of its Change for the Better mission, watchmaker Oris recently committed itself to protecting the Wadden Sea, the world's largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats. The eco-system of this site, listed in UNESCO's World Heritage, is monitored by the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat. This partnership gave rise to the Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition, a watch recognizable for its dial displaying the lunar cycle, high and low tides in the northern hemisphere.

Rolex Awards for Enterprise

Through these awards attributed every two years, Rolex rewards five projects which will help to transform tomorrow's world. In 2021, one such award was won by Luiz Rocha of Brazil who explores mesophotic coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, conducting studies and monitoring biodiversity. His project will enrich knowledge about species living in the reefs while delivering precious indications of conditions and changes in temperature over long periods of time.

Panerai teams up with UNESCO

Inseparable from the marine environment, Italian watchmaker Panerai has teamed up with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to develop ocean discovery activities within the context of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). This partnership will allow for the development of programmes and actions aiming to find innovative solutions to current and future challenges faced by the oceans.

Ulysse Nardin DIVER Lemon Shark

The shark is the symbol for Ulysse Nardin. Pursuing its commitment to its protection, the watchmaker confirmed on the last World Ocean Day its partnership with OCEARCH, an organization that carries out research on these great predators the world over. The announcement was accompanied by the launch of the DIVER Lemon Shark watch, a limited edition of 300 pieces inspired by lemon sharks whose natural habitat is mainly in the Florida Keys.
