Luxury cars: a new era

With the announcement that Jaguar and Bentley will be going all-electric in the coming years, the electrification of luxury cars is picking up speed.

With the announcement that Jaguar and Bentley will be going all-electric in the coming years, the electrification of luxury cars is picking up speed. Electric energy is gaining ground in the luxury car market. With ever stricter environmental standards to be observed, manufacturers are now obliged to undertake an about-turn regarding electrification of their cars. Furthermore, demand is growing among clients who, often drawn by tax advantages, are also more aware of ecology. At the beginning of the year, Thierry Bolloré, Director of Jaguar-Land Rover, announced that the entire Jaguar range will be 100% electric in 2025. The British manufacturer, already proposing the I-Pace model, an all-electric SUV, since 2018, is thus  moving into top gear.

In 2019, Porsche created a buzz with the launch of the Taycan, its first fully-electric sports saloon. This year, the German manufacturer has unveiled its fourth version. With two-speed transmission on the rear axel, this new model proposes two different batteries. The standard Performance battery delivers up to 300 kW (408 hp) in Overboost mode with a Launch Control function, as compared to 350 kW (476 hp) with the optional Performance Plus battery. Depending on the battery, the nominal power rating is 240 kW (326 hp) and 280 kW (380 hp) respectively. In both cases, the Taycan attains 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h.

In early 2022, Maserati will also unveil its first all-electric model, the GranTurismo, which will be followed at year end by the GranCabrio. It is the same story from Ferrari, Bentley and Aston Martin who have all announced their intention of following the same route. They will all launch an all-electric model by  2025, though we will have to wait a while longer to discover the first all-electric Lamborghini. Bentley has also said it will go 100% electric as from 2030. Meanwhile, this British manufacturer will enrich its offerings with a hybrid option for each of its models, such as the  brand new Flying Spur Hybrid. And finally, Ferrari recently introduced its rechargeable hybrid  SF90 Stradale. Slowly but surely…
