Harmonious interludes

From early repeater watches to artist collaborations, watchmaking and the music scene synergize, birthing exceptional creations.

Beyond mere measurements, harmonious notes play and transcend time and space, resonating beyond the dials. The fusion of two arts, music-loving watchmaking exudes its melodic essence, offering a uniquely refined sensory experience.

A shared history between jewelry and instrument, endures from the earliest repeater watches. Originally designed to sound the time with a pusher or lock, these timepieces gained popularity in the late 17th century for telling time in darkness. Evolving from simple musical mechanisms to masterful complexities, watchmaking artisans crafted exceptional pieces like Patek Philippe and Breguet brands.

Enter the realm of minute repeater watches, where horological brilliance intertwines with musical artistry, enabling the rendition of intricate, diverse sounds – and even empowering the creation of personal compositions.

Partnerships and patronages

The prestigious watchmaking houses are perpetuating this tradition today, while developing new relationships with the fourth art. To illustrate the musical universe, what better than to call on ambassadors?

For several decades, the famous Swiss manufacturer Rolex has partnered up with personalities who, through advertising campaigns, help to promote the brand. In 1976, soprano Kiri Te Kanawa became the first partner figure from the artistic realm. Since then, other artists have become involved, such as Gustavo Dudamel, conductor in Los Angeles, Yuja Wang, classical Chinese pianist, or pop music singer Michael Bublé.

In addition to these connections with talent, the Rolex brand engages in sponsorship activities, through its own artistic mentoring program, and by supporting concerts and festivals. In the Vallée de Joux, the Audemars Piguet house has long been exploring its relationship with the world of music. After collaborating with Jay-Z and Quincy Jones, the Swiss fine watchmaker has teamed up with composer and producer Mark Ronson to launch Syncing Sounds, a program dedicated to the creative process and the promotion of human talent.

Artistic expression

Beyond artistic representation, some encounters lead to the creation of exclusive timepieces. In 2021, Hublot and DJ Snake, an icon in electronic music, unveiled a limited-edition Big Bang DJ Snake, with 100,000 pieces available. Its iridescent and polished titanium case reveals colorful, electric, and ever-changing reflections, reminiscent of a rainbow, reflecting the artist's personality.

On the other hand, Audemars Piguet has just launched the Royal Oak Offshore Automatic - Music Edition, a new watch designed for music enthusiasts. With a black ceramic case, the dial features technicolor counter stripes, reminiscent of those on a recording studio equalizer. This limited edition of 250 pieces starts at 41,700 euros and will definitely captivate discerning collectors.
