At the crossroads of art, science, and technology, his designs surprise and amaze. Like his Inverted Gravity console, expertly pairing marble with bubbles of hand-blown glass in a composition defying the laws of gravity. An incredible technological achievement, also explored in the Happy To Be Here collection. Mathieu Lehanneur draws inspiration from his perception of the world around us. Far from being passive, his pieces, sculpted with precision and delicacy, invite us to touch, interact, and question. “They are not there to dictate our postures,” he says. “It is up to the user to appropriate them depending on his needs and wishes.” As witnessed by his Familyscape series, sofas conducive to conversation, relaxation, or meditation. Design at the service of comfort and aesthetics - though not only. For Mathieu Lehanneur, an object should transgress its primary function to rouse awe. He strives to create works which transcend their materiality while blending naturally into our daily lives. “They must incite feelings, mystery, and magic.” His vision calls for contemplation and reflection, with each design offering an almost surrealist dimension in itself.
In line with the motto of Pierre Berger and Saint-Laurent, “Better an empty wall than a mediocre painting,” Mathieu Lehanneur adopts an organic approach. His credo? Less, but better. “Living areas should not be too overcrowded, but liberated from everything superfluous. Let’s leave room for moving around, breathing, living.” As in a minimalist interior? “No, far from that idea. A totally immaculate apartment is, for me, deprived of life.” For Mathieu Lehanneur, removing useless decor means, above all, leaving material in its very essence, “without distorting it, so it can express itself in all its splendour.” Earthenware, glass, and marble are often found in the hands of this magician. “They are materials that radiate outwards through their souls. They all have a past, resulting from Man’s creative genius. They precede us by thousands of years and will survive us.” In his work, colours are discreet, adding accents of fantasy in subtle touches to a harmonious whole.
The result of research and countless prototypes, Mathieu Lehanneur’s designs now travel to all four corners of the world in the brand bearing his name, launched in 2018. One of the latest to date? Guernica, a ceramic lamp. “Beforehand, we produced a 3D scan of a flower, an iris, then modified it on the computer.” Inspired by nature, the lamp diffuses soft, enveloping light, like a caress. “Forget austere ceiling lights, use more sources of light to compose a symphony of intensities and sculpt the atmosphere you prefer,” advises the 50-year-old. “Our pupils constantly adjust to light. Why shouldn’t our homes follow the same principle?” This avant-garde artist thus invites us to reimagine our homes as havens of well-being where materials, colour and light harmonize to nurture our identities and emotions.
"An object’s beauty comes from its intelligence.” - Mathieu Lehanneur
