Marrakesh, a land of craftsmanship

In Marrakesh, craftsmanship is to be found on each street corner. From workshops in the Medina to boutiques in Guéliz, designers and craftsmen re-invent and bring to life ancestral expertise.

Each neighbourhood in Marrakesh reveals a special approach to craftsmanship, somewhere between tradition and renewal. In the Medina, narrow streets unfurl between the shade of covered passages and the bright colours of street stands. At the far end of the El-Ghassoul souk, Bouyaghssane Lahcen works on wood – from lemon, olive and carob trees – to hand-produce planks, bowls and cutlery of total simplicity, but using very precise gestures.

Not far from here, in the Sidi Ahmed Soussi Derb, Moro Marrakech plays host to a minimalist store dedicated to Moroccan know-how. In terra-cotta tableware, handwoven textiles, furnishings with sober lines, local craftsmanship is revisited with care and correctness.

When retuning to Guéliz, the avenues become wider. Between cafés and galleries, the Maison Bahira perpetuates the art of embroidered or woven linen using traditional techniques. One also finds fine tablecloths, delicate pillowcases and sets of bed linen, each one bearing the memory of ancestral handiwork.

To the north, in the Majorelle neighbourhood, the pace slows down. Facing the gardens, the 33 Rue Majorelle concept store displays a refined selection of handcrafted items: baskets made of doum, enamelled tableware, babouches made of soft leather, perforated lighting… These everyday objects have been carefully chosen to re-live the charm of this place back home.

Finally, when leaving the city on the road to Amizmiz, landscapes open up to the first slopes of the Atlas Mountains. It is here that Soufiane Zarib displays his handwoven carpets: whether traditional Berber pieces, contemporary designs or made-to-measure models, they all pay homage to the richness of know-how in the mountains.
